Babies
are a gift from heaven and their parents can usually be found wound
around their little fingers. Precious additions to the family, babies
offer the most expressive evidence of love as well as the most demanding
of personalities. After all, a baby is extremely vulnerable to the
world and Mom and Dad must take responsibility for their offspring
and protect their baby and ensure their child's health and future.
One of the most endearing sounds a parent can hear is their baby
cooing and breathing, as they are held close. On the opposite side,
the discomforts of a baby result in the most horrendous noises ever
made by mankind. And to what could parents owe such screaming and
crying? Have you checked into your baby's comfort? Imagine heading
to work wearing paper underwear. Imagine going out to dinner and
a show wearing grocery store bags instead of shoes. Comfort is an
element adults take for granted. Whether the comfort is derived
from enjoying a fine glass of wine and dinner at a high-end restaurant,
or relaxing in the warmth of a hot tub on a chilly evening, peace
of mind and satisfaction are derived from creature comforts. How
easily we forget that our babies also would appreciate such considerations,
as well. But some of the hierarchies we establish for our children
can be truly inane. For example, when your baby is in his or her
crib after being moved from the parental bed, which he or she didn't
want to do in the first place, and starts to cry, what are the odds
the parents will ignore that squawking? After all, he or she is
in that crib, and that means QUIET. Hungry? Forget it the baby must
wait until the parents check the time and determine the right moment
to assuage the youngster's hunger pains. All of these elements are
due to an industrial society where the clock rules all.
An important element to a baby's comfort is at the bottom of the
list yep, the diapers. OK, time for a test. What's softer? Laundered
cloth or plastic and/or paper products? What's easier on the baby's
bottom? Uh-oh, problem… parents are in a rush and using a pre-packed,
industrialized diaper is sooooo much easier to remove and replace.
Toss the used diaper away, rips open the adhesive tabs on the new
diaper, slap it into place and seal 'em up, and the baby is all
set to go.
Has the baby any say in this basic matter? Cloth
diapers have been used for centuries, and for good reason. They
are more comfortable and more absorbent than most of today's modern
diaper products. Perhaps Mom or Dad doesn't believe they have the
time to commit to laundering the softer material for their baby.
Perhaps consideration should be given to the one that is the result
of their love, and that love should be expressed with a wee bit
more consideration and a simple setting of a more important priority.
